The BBC has announced more casting details for the upcoming remake of John Wyndham’s classic British slice of science fiction, The Day of the Triffids. Although I’m usually wary of yet another version of a story which has been redone already in film, TV and radio (and a literary sequel by Simon Clark some years back) my interest here is piqued by the fact it has a bloody impressive cast – Dougray Scott as the main hero, Dr Bill Masen, who will be joined by Eddie Izzard (who can be seen at the moment in cinemas in Valkrie, where he is almost unrecognisable), the always impressive Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave and her daughter Joely Richardson. The programme will be made in high definition, so I’m guessing they are confident the modern effects will be up to that level of detail, unlike the early 1980s version. Rumours that celeb TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh would cameo as a guerilla gardener leading resistance to the conquering plants appear to have been wishful thinking.
