Via Boing Boing comes a link to this online archive of every cover for the famed National Lampoon humour magazine from 1970 (such as the one above, from December 1970) right through to 1998, so its not just a collection showing cover art and design changing over the years, its also reflecting the different period’s interests and satirical targets. And sometimes the Lampoon would bring in allusions to another fabled American humour mag, such as the August 1971 cover (below) that the BB article singled out, by famed SF illustrator Kelly Freas depicting William Calley (a US serviceman convicted of war crimes over the infamous My Lai massacre) as an adult MAD Magazine’s Alfred E Neuman.
There are plenty to browse through, some illustrated, some photographic, some obviously better than others (and some naturally held up better over time and changing tastes than others), so go and have a look; meantime here’s one more to be getting on with to start your Monday with a smile (this one goes out to all the RPGers out there!), from January of 1982 (gee, remember those days? More thank likely I was actually doing some D&D back then…):
