Books, Film, TV and radio

Following hot on the heels of the news that Neil Gaiman’s Graveyard Book has won the prestigious Newbery Medal (see the earlier post) Neil has announced on the Today Show in the US that Oscar winning director and writer Neil Jordan will helm a film adaptation of the novel.  Jordan is probably best known for the classic film The Crying Game, although fantasy genre fans will also know him for his early effort High Spirits (admittedly cheesy Irish ghost comedy but not without its charms) and the far more impressive adaptation of Angela Carter’s tales (from The Bloody Chamber) for The Company of Wolves, a lush, dark fairy tale underpinned by adolescence, sexuality, violence and identity (“the worst kind of wolves are hairy on the inside”) as well as a seductive adaptation of Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire. Its too early for much in the way of details – who will be in it, when will it commence shooting, will Neil G adapt his own book to a script or will Neil J do that? – but I’m sure we’ll be hearing more in due course. Personally I’m quite happy with the idea of Neil Jordan bringing the book to celluloid life. (via ICV2)
