“The reaction has been really positive. The biggest fan being Mr Editor-of-The Times himself, James Harding. Basically, he’s happy because his readers are and my immediate editor (of T2) told me that she thinks they’ve turned the readers of The Times onto comics which is cool. That’s nearly a million people!” Nick Abadzis tells Down The Tubes about the incredibly encouraging reaction of both the editors and readers of The Times to his Trial of the Sober Dog strip.

As John Freeman of DTT remarked to some of us recently, that has to be good not just for Nick but for comics in general – high profile, national exposure, much of it I’d guess being to an audience who aren’t necessarily overly familiar with comics. Let’s hope that encourages more of them to seek out some graphic novels. Nick told DTT he was currently working on expanding and re-working Trial of the Sober Dog (I’m assuming for future publication?) and on Skin Trouble for FirstSecond; the highly acclaimed Rutu Modan, he said, looks likely to be the next comics artist in the Times. Now it has finished its run in the Times Nick has made the entire series available to read on his site. With so many newspapers and journals cutting back on cartoonists its refreshing to be able to post such a positive story.
