Due to industrial action by the Royal Mail the organisers of this year’s Observer/Jonathan Cape/Comica short graphic fiction prize have decided to extend the deadline to allow for any delays that are outwith the control of entrants – the deadline now moves from September 25th to October 19th. The first couple of years of the prize have been great, not only giving an up and coming artist a cash award but publication in the Observer and a damned good public plug for the comics medium into the bargain; last year’s winner, Julian Hanshaw, has since gone on to land a deal with Cape for a graphic novel, The Art of Pho, due next spring. The judges for this third year of the award comprise Suzanne Dean of Random House (Cape’s parent company), Dan Franklin of Jonathan Cape, Paul Gravett, Rachel Cooke from the Observer and artists Simone Lia and Joe Sacco – details available on the Comica site. (thanks to Paul Gravett for the update; on a related note you should check out Paul’s new article on comics and the Great War on his site)

On the one hand, I was hoping they’d do that as I’d be posting mine tomorrow and was nervous about the post. Good on them.
But on the other, that means further temptation to tweak and obsess…
