You might remember earlier this year illustrator and comics creator Simon Gurr worked with Eugene Byrne on a comics biography of Charles Darwin which was given out to school children and others to encourage more reading of the natural sciences and to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Darwin. Now on his blog Simon posts up a quite incredible post-script to those efforts which I have to say make me quite jealous – he’s going to following in some of Darwin’s footsteps: “I’m preparing to fly to Uruguay and it seems like another personal comic milestone is about to happen. At Montevideo I’ll be boarding the clipper Stad Amsterdam, which is carrying a team from Dutch broadcaster VPRO along the same route Darwin travelled in 1831-1836. They are making a TV series Beagle: On the Future of Species which examines “where the world stands today in light of Darwin’s evolution theory”. The scientists and other experts on board have already made some amazing discoveries and it’s a huge privilege to be invited to join them.” I believe the appropriate response to this news is “wow”.
