Comedian, music fan and major comics reader Phil Jupitus, who’s graced BBC Radio with several very welcome comics-related broadcasts in the last couple of years, talks about his comics reading history in the Mail and, rather nicely, relating the buzzing comics scene with the vibrant music scene of the time:
(the Freak Brothers Omnibus by and (c) Gilbert Shelton, published Knockabout)
“When I was about 14, a mate took me to a hippy shop and I found a few of these alternative comics such as The Furry Freak Brothers, and they were actually naughty. There was sex and swearing, which to me seemed incredibly exotic. I absolutely fell in love with them – but there wasn’t an easy way of getting hold of them.
In the Eighties a lot of the bands I met were into comics. Julian Cope got the name for The Teardrop Explodes from Teardrop Explodes from the pages of Daredevil. Madness named their label Zarjazz after a word from 2000AD. “
