The Hollywood Reporter announces that there may be another Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie – normally that’s something that would have most of us at FPI jumping up and down with pleasure and running around with our Mr Pointy stakes. But further reading gives much cause for trepidation. Why? Because its got nothing to do with the mighty Joss Whedon, that’s why. Fran Rubel and Kaz Kuzui are floating the project with some others; Kuzui discovered a then unknown Whedon and developed the script idea he had into the original Kristy Swanson starring Buffy movie (which, let’s be honest, was pretty poor) and also was instrumental in helping to get the (far superior since Whedon had far more creative control and freedom) Buffy TV series a home. Kuzui also, according to THR, held onto some rights which she now seems to want to develop, although any film, should it happen, wouldn’t be a prequel or a sequel, more likely either a remake or a re-launch in the vein of the incredibly successful Star Trek film reboot.

I can’t honestly say the prospect of it excites me (although as with all things, I give it the benefit of the doubt until its actually done and I can see it and judge for myself) as Buffy without the guiding hand of creator Joss just doesn’t seem worth doing, although the article notes that they don’t rule out bringing Whedon onboard at some point, but you’d think if they really wanted him onboard they would have approached him before going public, not after? At least if it isn’t a sequel or prequel it means it doesn’t interfere with established Buffy history. Meantime it looks like fans of the proper Buffy will have to stick with the (rather excellent) ‘eighth season’ published by Dark Horse under Whedon’s direction and writing; on which note the latest collected volume of which, The Time of Your Life, hit the shelves just this month.(via Neill Cameron)
