Film, TV and radio

More sad news, after the death of Patrick McGoohan its now just coming out on various web news sites that fellow actor Ricardo Montalban has passed away at the age of 88. The actor appeared in a huge variety of films, plays and TV shows from an early small part in a Tallulah Bankhead play in 1941 through a number of Spanish and English language roles in the following decades of his long career. He was almost certainly best known for lending his distinctive appearance and wonderful voice to the cult TV show Fantasy Island and, of course, he is forever known to science fiction fans for his role as the genetically engineered dictator Khan Noonian Singh (I can’t resist a shout of “Kkhhhhaaannnnnn!!!!”) in the original 60s Star Trek’s episode Space Seed, a role he would return to with great relish in the 1980s for the feature film Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan, where he managed to give an almost operatic, melodramatic performance as the scenery chewing villain and yet not come across as ridiculous, earning him a serious place in Trek lore. In the wake of Montalban’s passing, Obama revealed today that he would immediately scrap all Abraham Lincoln references at his inauguration and instead would deliver a new theme of “Fantasy Inauguration”.
