The BBC announces (via Hollywood Reporter) that director Raja Gosnell has been signed up to helm a feature length Smurfs movie. Yes, Peyo’s little blue folks who were celebrating their fiftieth anniversary on the Continent (where they remain well known, unlike here) just last year, are coming to the big screen in glorious 3D (as seems almost mandatory for studio animations these days), most likely in a combination of animation with some live action. Somehow I suspect updating the concept and giving it a grittier, darker edge a la Battlestar Galactica is not going to be on the cards… Gosnell directed Scooby Doo and Beverly Hills Chihuahua – I do not trust myself to comment further…
