Film, TV and radio

The ashes of Majel Barrett Roddenberry will be launched into space along with those of her husband, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, it has been announced. Trek fans will probably be aware that some of Gene’s remains were launched into the Final Frontier after his death in the early 90s, a final voyage that was organised by his wife, but some of his ashes were kept, with their son Eugene saying that his mother specifically wanted her own remains to be launched into space with those of her husband after her own death; he added that he hoped the spacecraft would “carry their spirits, memories, and the message of their life’s work into the cosmos on an infinite journey into deep space.” Majel, who had contributed to every version of Star Trek across the decades, passed away just before Christmas from leukaemia, but not before recording the computer voice for this summer’s forthcoming Star Trek film, meaning, rather touchingly, that when it arrives she will still be a part of the continuing missions. That’s a nice thought. (via the BBC)
