The BBC reports on The Hunt for Gollum, a forty minute fan-made Lord of the Rings film which premieres this weekend at Sc-Fi London. (which kicked off yesterday and runs until May 4th, with a pretty packed programme). The two years in the making project by dedicated amateurs has the approval of Tokien Enterprises as it is a not for profit endeavour. Considering that and the fact it was made for around £3, 000 by 160 fans working in their own free time its pretty impressive and professional looking, which are qualities I’ve noticed increasingly in fan films in the last few years (although as driector Chris Bouchard notes, while the likes of Star Trek and Star Wars have been well served by fans films, some very impressive, Lord of the Rings hasn’t had so many) – being able to network contributions in areas like visual effects from many people around the world via the web has to help in that respect.
The Hunt for Gollum, which draws very much on the visual style created by the rather larger budgeted Peter Jackson modern classics, gets its well deserved premiere on Sunday at Sci-Fi London; for those of us outside London the film will be released free on the web on May 3rd, so even if we have rotten weather over the May bank holiday weekend at least we’re not going to be stuck for indoor entertainment. Check out their official site, which also mimics a professional movie’s look right down to hi-def trailers; its all very impressive and more than worthy of your support.

The Gollum fan film is getting a ton of coverage all over the net, and I’m not surprised as I’ve been writing about them on my daily fan film blog, fancinematoday.com for months. For what it’s worth, if you want to find out more about fan films in general, I wrote the first book about the history and future of ‘em, Homemade Hollywood, which just came out.
