The Secret of Kells

Artist  and one of the organisers of the Irish 24 Hour Comics Day Cliodhna Lyons points us to an English language trailer (a French version beat the English language version to the punch, probably because it has a release in France and Belgium in early February) for the upcoming  Irish animated film The Secret of Kells. You might remember I mentioned this some time back when Cliodhna was discussing her contribution to the animation which was coming out of The Cartoon Salon studio in Kilkenny; its something I’ve been looking forward to seeing. From what I’ve seen so far (have a look at Tomm’s blog for the film) it looks lovely, as you might expect for an animation inspired by the Book of Kells, one of the most beautiful, hand-made works of illuminated literature in Western history. From Tomm’s blog it looks like the film is already getting some special screenings in Europe ahead of its main release (and being well received), which is great news. The Irish opening should take place on March 5th, Cliodhna tells me, not sure yet about a UK release, but hopefully not long after that. I have to agree with Cliodhna’s comment about the voice-over though – she remarked that the English trailer had a very ‘Disney’ style voice-over (not in the good way) which thankfully the French version didn’t have. It really didn’t suit the look of the film at all, I think, but at the end of the day we can blot out the annoying Enthusiastic Voice Over Man and just enjoy some gorgeous animation.
