Thought Bubble 2009

Lisa Wood has been in touch to let us know the dates for the 2009 Thought Bubble comics festival, as well as some details and some information for comics creators and fans who wish to take part both on the day and in the events surrounding the con:

Thought Bubble will be in it’s 3rd year this year and will run from the 20th – 22nd November with a one day convention event on Saturday 21st at Saviles Hall Leeds, England. Throughout this year’s event we will hold workshops, talks, comic related film screenings and a huge book crossing. In our 2009 book crossing we will attempt to turn Leeds in to one massive comic store, by leaving graphic novels all around the city for people to pick up in our goal to promote literacy though sequential art.

We are a non-profit making organisation dedicated to spreading the word of comics and manga though free workshops for children and adults and other comic related activities. If anyone is interested in helping, appearing or finding out more about this years event just send me an email. Our table prices for this years one day con on Sat 21st Nov are:Small Press £40, Professional £40, Retail and Publisher £60

I especially like the idea of more ‘outreach’ type events to introduce more people, young and old, to comics (and also to use them as an aide to encourage reading in general), I know that kind of community involvement has been a component in the success of the likes of Hi-Ex (and in interesting more than just the hardcore comics fans in the event). And the book crossing is a nice notion too and not one I’ve heard of being done with comics too often (if you aren’t familiar with the idea, its been around for several years and involves leaving a book once you finish it, placed somewhere public like a bus, cafe etc, to share with the next person who comes along and so on. I’ve even known a few authors who have tried it with their own books to create awareness). Our own Richard Bruton was at the 2008 Thought Bubble with Molly and you can read his report here.
