BoingBoing points us towards a new art blog by Leif Peng, called Female Illustrators of the mid-20th Century. It isn’t specifically comics art, but it is, as the title implies, shining a light on women artists, most of whom I’ve not come across before and as is the way with this kind of thing it seems to be an interesting way to explore art by creators you’ve not seen before (as well as celebrating the work of the artists). It looks like it only started at the beginning of March but already there are a number of illustrators on the blog to browse. Some have a little information (I’d imagine anyone with more information on those artists would be most welcome to drop a line to Leif), others have some context for the artists, such as the art and entry on Lorraine Fox, who as the blog explains, more than held her own in a male-dominated industry in the 50s, being published in many major magazines at a time when this work would mostly have been created by men (even for publications aimed at women); it’s interesting for anyone interested in illustration and I’d suspect of special interest to some of our female readers, especially those who create and draw their own comics. A new blog to bookmark and check back on regularly, I think.
