Neil Gaiman chats in a five minute video on the BBC website, in a piece that starts, appropriately enough, with Camile Saint-Saens Danse Macabre (a favourite classical piece of mine, as it happens). It’s only five minutes or so but they do cover his comics, his books for children and adults and the multiple awards Neil’s scored in all of these different fields. When asked about starting out in comics and asking if that means a writer perhaps doesn’t get taken so seriously he mentioned a science fiction writing friend who complained that his literary fiction gets treated differently by critics from his science fiction; Neil comments “I come from comics, that’s not even the gutter, that’s the drain the gutter runs into. So I absolutely never minded about being taken seriously. I’m perturbed at the same time that I’m delighted that I’m being taught in universities or when you win the major literary awards“
