Red Light Properties Dan Goldman Tor

Dan Goldman‘s new strip, Red Light Properties, began yesterday on science fiction site Tor.com (which also has some excellent short SF&F online to enjoy). Dan describes RLP as “the story of a small Miami Beach real estate office that lists and exorcises haunted houses and connects them with foreclosure victims in need of an affordable place to live.” I read the first few pages last night and it won’t surprise regular readers to learn that I liked it as they know I’m a big fan of Dan’s work, having first become aware of his comics through Shooting War and my favourite webcomics site Act-I-Vate.

It’s an intriguing idea, spinning very much out of the current economic debacle but with a supernatural twist and I have to say I like the format too – instead of simply re-creating the static, printed page online as many do the panels and even speech bubbles appear one after the other as you click them, which I found curiously satisfying. Artwise it looks like Dan is continuing to mash up the mediums with drawn art over what look like photographic elements, something he’s done before to great effect and, I’m glad to note, there are some elements of the fab experimenting with cool colouring effects in a few panels too, something he’s done extremely well in online strips like Kelly. Red Light Properties will be serialised on Tor over the next six months – bookmark now.
