There have been rumblings in the online comics community of a sample issue of a new magazine about comics popping up in their inboxes. And it looks like this:
Steve Holland at Bear Alley has been doing a little asking around and it seems we have an old familiar name back doing comics mags:
“Multiverse is a new title from Mike Conroy, ex-editor of Comics International. The 16-page ‘Issue Zero’ sampler pictured is ready to go and the first issue, which will run to 48 pages plus covers, is due to be released in time for the MCM Expo which is to be held at ExCel in London’s Docklands on 29-31 October. The new title is being co-produced by Mike and Barry Renshaw, founder of Engine Comics and former editor ofRedeye magazine who also worked on Comics International towards the end of its run.”
Okay. That’s interesting. And it would be nice to have a regular print mag about comics back, no matter how much I enjoy reading various bits and bobs online there’s a nice feel to settling down with a proper mag, a cup of coffee and just whiling away a Sunday morning.
But there’s a big bit of me that has to warn of caution. I’m pretty sure that come MCM Expo we’ll see that first issue and I really, really hope it does well, I really, really hope it’s good, well-written, stuff covering all aspects of the comics scene.
But I can’t help think, given the connections to the disaster that was the end of Comics International, with it’s terribly messy and terminally slow death of a thousand missed deadlines, that until I actually see this in print over a course of 6 months, regularly hitting it’s release dates, I’ll be considering it a little bit of wishful thinking from all concerned.
Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see it on the stands, month after month (or whatever the schedule is meant to be) but let’s just say I wont be holding my breath.
