Comics and cartoons

Completely forgot to mention this a while back, but thought it needed covering just in case you missed it.

It’s going to be a great year for Fantagraphics (and for us comic fans) – as they’ve recently announced that they’ve acquired the right from Disney to produce what may well become the definitive Carl Barks Donald Duck Comics. The first volume, priced at $25, comes out in autumn 2011, with two volumes a year after that.

It might be definitive, but unlike Fantagraphics beautifully done Peanuts collection, it wont be chronological. The first volume contains the classic “Lost In The Andes” whilst the second volume jumps around a little to give us the first Uncle Scrooge tale. Following that the subsequent volumes will start filling in the gaps of the earliest work.

Overall, with two volumes a year we’re looking at roughly a 15 year publishing commitment from Fantagraphics. And doesn’t that sound great?

The exclusive news and an interview with publisher Gary Groth at Robot 6, thoughtful commentary from Tom and you can download the spring/summer catalogue from the Fantagraphics webpage.

“15 year publishing commitment”? “Sound great”? Jesus, Richard, I hope to god I’m not still reading comics in fifteen months time let alone fifteen years time!

You’ve just made me feel unwell.

15 years of 2 Carl Barks duck volumes a year – how is that a bad thing? In fact – why would you be hoping to stop reading comics at all? Are you okay?

  3. John Says:

I still cling to the hope that my comics-reading is just a phase! More accurately, though: talk of the future – living there, even – makes me break out in commitment phobia.

Ah, I see….. well don’t worry, how about you just ignore the whole 15 years thing and pretend it’s a complete surprise each six months or so when you get a new Barks’ volume?
