Brum’s Nostalgia & Comics damaged during riots

Comics and cartoons

Kenny is reporting to us this morning that our Nostlagia & Comics store, long a landmark in Birmingham’s comics scene, was damaged last night as the shameful rioting spread from London to Brum and cities further afield; I don’t have much in the way of details but have been told there is some pretty expensive damage to the windows. I don’t understand this surge of street violence and opportunistic looting at all, attacking people’s livelihoods and homes, and I understand this even less – I mean who the drokk targets a much loved comics store in a riot? We’re all for including comics in the field of literary criticism, but frankly that’s taking it too far.

The good news is, despite the damage Kenny tells us that most importantly our Brum staff are okay, they were not present when it all kicked off thankfully. And they will be opening and trading as usual today. Comics lovers of Birmingham, N&C is a class store with a good history of staff who are passionate about the medium and who have supported the small and Indy presses as well as the big name titles, so if you are in the area please show the N&C crew some support and love. And indeed the same message of support to everyone else suffering from the shameful behaviour of these thugs in far too many areas. Peace out.

    Sorry to hear about this.

Oh, that’s just bloody horrible. Was following the events of last night with continued horror, watching the violence and frankly, mindless thievery spreading through London and out to Birmingham, Liverpool, Nottingham and elsewhere.

All too often in reports I’ve read from people in London and Birmingham it just seems that all too many people on the streets last night were out for whatever they could get, glorying in their abilities to create as much damage and chaos as possible.

It wasn’t a big deal joe. Broken window and door. No-one harmed and when you see people jumping from windows to avoid burning in Croydon you get a little context. This is a very minor thing. I could give you my theory for why people riot and loot like this going back to the privatisation of British Gas etc and the employment of the Police as the states enforcers by Thatcher and all the things that subsequently sprung from those actions. But that’s for another time.
