FPI Most Wanted – Books to look for coming in August And September

Another month begins, another list of graphic novels and comics we’d like to suggest you take a look at coming at you over the next couple of months… here’s what we’re looking forward to in August and September 2011:

AUGUST 2011

Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s fantastic We3 gets deluxe hardcover treatment. Mad Love and Other Stories gets a paperback reissue – for my money, Mad Love is the greatest Batman story ever. Emma Vieceli illustrates this adaptation of the popular novel series – Vampire Academy.

The annual Love & Rockets – always a guaranteed buy. Michael Kupperman’s Twain biography looks intriguing, whilst the new hardback edition of Blankets is a very welcome return.

J. Michael Straczynski takes Superman on a journey across the U.S. in Grounded Volume 1, originally presented in Superman issues #700 to 706. The huge, beautiful and definitive Absolute series of Promethea by Alan Moore and JH Williams reaches a conclusion with Volume 3.  And Steve Ditko’s Shade gets the Omnibus treatment.

The Len Wein written DC Universe Legacies tackles DC Comics’ epic history – just before a lot of it gets altered or thrown out completely with September’s 52 new titles. But Mike Mignola’s Hellboy is building up a fair old history of it’s own, with no plans for revision yet – BRPD Hell On Earth gets a collection in August. And a great series from Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith from the early 2000s – occult detective series Criminal Macabre.

Another really great couple of Blank Slate Books releases – in their Chalk Marks format – Nick Edwards’ Dinopopolous and Harvey James’ A Long Day Of Mr James, Teacher.

SEPTEMBER 2011

Wood & Kelly’s New York Five story gets a collection, as does Morrison and Murphy’s Joe The Barbarian. And Craig Thompson’s Habibi looks like it will be one of those very important books, a retelling of a Middle Eastern fable.

New Adrian Tomine Optic Nerve…. practically one every five years – but well worth the wait in all probability. And Fantagraphics’ Setting The Standard, Comics by Alex Toth ’52-’54 promises to be “the first comprehensive collection of the great graphic storyteller’s work from the era…. for this 416-page full-color tome.”. Boom Studioscollect a heap of Roger Langridge’s work in The Show Must Go On – a collection long, long overdue.

Mr & Mrs Gaiman – Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer collaborate on the Evelyn Evelyn book. And the fabulous Summit Of The Gods Vol 3 should (fingers crossed) be out.

Seth’s latest sketchbook comic – The Great Northern Brotherhood Of Canadian Cartoonists, a companion to the previous Wimbledon Green. Bastien Vives’ A Taste Of Chlorine looks simply gorgeous, out from Cape in September. And Kate Brown’s Fish + Chocolate is already being talked about as one of the books that may well be on everyone’s end of year lists.

And as a complete change of pace and content – First Second’s Feynman biography looks amazing. As does Rob Davis’ sumptuous adaptation of Don Quixote. And Daniel Clowes’ Death-Ray – you don’t need me to say more surely?

Classic Mills and O’Neill (amongst others) in Flesh – The Dino Files. Image series Carbon Grey comes to collection. And Eisner’s Preventative Maintainance Monthly instructional comics finally get a collection, masterminded by Eddie Cambell.

And last but not least the latest from Blank Slate Books – Love Looks Away – is a must – it just looks amazingly good. As does the next in their Chalk Marks series – Pablo Apple Tree by Luke Astrorigin.

Okay, that’s it for this  month – what looks good to you coming to the shelves?
