Snow Trap

By David Ziggy Greene

A little present that dropped through my letter box, courtesy of David Ziggy Greene, Snow Trap is a very mini comic – just 10 pages, A6 sized, specially produced for Angouleme 2011.

And it’s just a funny, well put together short strip – a tale of record shops, the people who work there, a quest to find the person with a fondness for new wave records who doesn’t like to pay for them. And snow. Lots of snow:

(Yes, is New Wave really worth this? 3 pages of Snow Trap – there’s 7 more to go. But they’re worth finding out for yourselves.)

It’s a great little comic, full of some lovely cartooning, exaggerated characters and funny gags. The slow moving, snowbound chase takes our two rather hapless record store employees at a nearby house party – could this be where the New Wave loving/stealing shopper/thief has bolted to? Could that Talking Heads track be from Vinyl & Proud? And what damage could Thomas really do with a metal ruler?

In just these few pages Greene pulls off some lovely, expression laden cartooning, establishes a fun little story – and somehow, within the ever so tight confines of the 10 pages, manages to pull off a chase scene and action packed finale. And he draws very good snow. Fortunate really, since it’s a good 4 or 5 foot deep by the end.

David Ziggy Greene’s last book – the much bigger and far more substantial Swimming With Shoes On was reviewed last year on the blog and whilst Snow Trap is smaller and much, much shorter it’s still a really fun little thing.
