Art For Art’s Sake

It’s Sunday, what better thing to do than peruse some comic art goodness….

Another Calvin And Hobbes piece… but a good one, yes? From George Zapata’s Deviant Art (Via Lulu Bonanza)

Jonathan Edwards does Jim Flora…

What’s that you say…. who’s Jim Flora?

Well Jonathan Edwards’ pic is just part of a bigger set at Illostribute blog, another great illustration site where they regularly get artists riffing off one topic. Anyway, Jim Flora  was an illustrator perhaps most famous for some truly distinctive jazz record covers of the 40s and 50s and Illostribute blog has a great piece here. From which, these two pieces, first the one Edwards was referencing:

And here’s something absolutely beautiful from Illostribute – Werner Hoffman:

Now, some great black and white from Paul Grist (Facebook) – cover image for Mudman #7:

Marc Hempel – The Endless (Via Aw Yeah Comics)

Phil Noto – Holly Golightly:

Des Taylor – a bit of Bettie Page in Lois Lane – (Via Lulu Bonanza)

And these beauts in B&W….

And whilst we’re talking superhero girlfriends…. here’s two from Steve Rude, both from Grantbridge Street: Gwen Stacy.:

… and best of all; M.J.

C.P. Wilson III keeps on with the E.H. Shepard references…. Wolvy Vs The Hulk amongst others at his Deviant Art site. (Via TT&RPA)

Great bit of old Dave Gibbons Rogue Trooper (Via Grantbridge Street)

Ivan Brunetti covers The New Yorker (Via Fantagraphics)

…. and finally…. you know, I never realised this, but dammit, it’s so true… Batman can’t backflip. Art and confirmation by Andrew Ross MacLeon (Via Buzzfeed):
