Art and animation

tereshkova

Philip J Bond has been updating his Flickr collection of art of female astronauts. I think they are cracking, both as art and as a nice way of looking at space exploration history – especially nice to see the women astronauts and cosmonauts being the focus for a change. I’m particularly taken with his depiction of Valentina Tereshkova (above), the first woman to ever enter space, way back in 1963, just a couple of years after her compatriot (and my boyhood hero) Yuri Gagarin has been the very first human being to sail beyond the atmosphere of our little world (is it just me or would this make a fab half comics/half pop art style print?). And he even has a nice verion of Helen Sharman, first woman from Britain to go into space:
