Comics: Cosplay and fair play…

Comics and cartoons

Following the apparant stupidity of Tony Harris slamming cosplaying women for just not doing it right (I summarise obviously, see the whole thing and commentary from Heidi) which in turn followed on from the equally dumb and profoundly thoughtless manner in which Dirk Manning appropriated a stupid Ted meme equating nerd girls with whores….

… here’s the best commentary on it I saw this week.

Megan Lovell. 17 years old and gets it absolutely spot on.

Cosplayers are wonderful. And far, far braver than I ever was. I never really got them for many years, but it was seeing them at the first Thought Bubble I attended in 2008 that completely sold me on the idea. Some are great, some look a little silly perhaps, but in the great majority of cases I see a group of very supportive nice people having a great time. They’re a tribe, just like Goths, emos, punks, skins, whatever you remember. And from the few I’ve talked to about this, the majority of there extended group know and love the comics they cosplay from. And frankly, if they don’t I do not care one bit. It may be slightly different over this side of the Atlantic, but I really cannot see what there is to get so heated about. People enjoy playing fancy dress? That’s worth a hissy fit?

Likewise, it was always a wincing moment seeing a girl / woman wander into a comic shop and be treated so badly. In a small medium it would be a really dumb idiot who thinks believing that comics in general and superhero comics in particular should be a selective club for little boys.

But then again, as we see time after time, it does seem that comics really does have its fair share of idiot little boys. On behalf of the worst aspects of my sex…. Sorry.

What this is all about is that idiot little boys are afraid of girls. My niece, who happens to be a tall, good-looking Italian girl, once innocently walked into one of your stores (I’m not saying which one). …you could have heard a pin drop…
