Comics and cartoons, Podcast

(Logo art by Kristyna Baczynski)

After the inaugural event at the recent Birmingham Zine Festival, artist Dan Berry has set up a great little podcast series of interviews with various artists of the UK comics scene. Similar to Kieron Gillen’s Decompressed podcast it’s a celebration of the craft and the look at all the work that goes into making the comics we all love. The first couple are round table style things, with groups of artists at the Birmingham Zine Festival, more recent ones are conversations with single artists. Both formats work, both are enjoyable listens.

(John Allison)

John Allison, winner of the British Comic Award 2012 – Best Comic, is in there, as is potential 2013 nominee Glyn Dillon (oh, come on, you’ve all seen the response of those who’ve read it!). But there’s also, in no particular order; Simone Lia, Kristyna Baczynski, Joe List, Jonathan Edwards, Felt Mistress, Warwick Johnson Cadwell, Lizz Lunney, Philippa Rice, Luke Pearson, Marc Ellerby, and Oliver East – and that’s just the first 5 podcasts!

And Dan reports that it’s been doing very well, in and out of the arts top 10 on iTunes for the past couple of weeks. So far I’ve managed to have a quick listen to the first couple and Oli East’s podcast, and they’re informed, relaxed, great listening. And occasionally, they’re damn funny….

Oliver East… on Swear Down, his next book…..

“I live in Old Trafford in Manchester and in the book I walk in a straight line out of my front door following the line of longitude south, which cuts through England, then Brittany, the length of Spain, Morroco, Algeria , Mali, Burkino Faso, and Ghana.

In Swear Down 1 I get as far as Congleton.”

Brilliant. Very Oli East that.
