The annual Observer/ Jonathan Cape / Comica Graphic Short Story Competition was announced last night, with Corban Wilkin taking the award with his story “But I Can’t“, a tale of school-friends and UFOs, growing up and growing apart.
It’s a lovely 4-pages, and available to read at The Observer, and also at Wilkins’ website. Here’s the first page as a taster:

Wilkins’ next project involves finishing his graphic novel “Breaker’s End”, about a couple living in a tent in the woods. It’s currently without a publisher. That may change now. Here’s a recently posted panel:

Runner-up this year went to a familiar name to readers of the FPI Blog; Steve Tillotson, with the story of icy isolation “I, Yeti“.
It’s another really strong 4-pager, with Tillotson supplying a beautiful range of emotions from his lonely Yeti. Again, here’s the first page:

Tillotson’s next project is the Leeds Alternative Comics Fair on the 8th December and after that there’s ideas for graphic novels to be followed up. There’s also his excellent webcomic Untitled Ape’s Epic Adventure that you should really be following:

There’s an exhibition of the previous 5 years winners and runners-up at Foyles bookshop gallery in London till Fri Nov 16th, as part of the Comica Festival running through November.

‘I, Yeti’ is excellent.
I must check out the winning entry as well later.
Thanks for mentioning this, Richard. It had entirely escaped my notice (I had not bought the Observer for the first time in a long time.)
