Comics: when reality and art meet – welcome to Trouser Tower

Comics and cartoons

Now this made me giggle, one of those delightful instances where life not only imitates art, it does so in a wonderfully absurd fashion. Woodrow Phoenix reminds us of a previous project he and Ian Carney did, with their character Pants Ant in the Sugar Buzz comic, for Slave Labor Graphics. Pants Ant lived in his special base (which you can see above), the brilliantly named Trouser Tower. It appears reality (or at least what we refer to as reality, never really sure about that stuff myself) is now re-creating (or perhaps even inadvertantly parodying) art as this massive new structure being erected in Shanghai shows – not only is it yet another giant building joining a rash of recent such major projects all over Asia, this one bears an uncanny resemblance to Trouser Tower. Behold:

It gets even better – this currently under construction 300 metre tall building, the Gate to the East Tower in Suzhou by British architects RMJM, has been dubbed by some in China as ‘giant underpants’ already. RMJM have responed that their construction is not a joke in De Zeen mag. Of course this was probably before it was compared to the fabled lair of Pants Ant. It may offend the architectural team, but personally I’d love it if the name Trouser Tower caught on for this building, the basement level should be referred to as ‘socks’ and the high speed lifts as “the zip fastners”. What a wonderful world when such silly total coincidences can happen in it…
