From our continental correspondent – Rock Les zombies!

Même Pas Mal Editions is one of the more interesting independent French publishers, with a very strong connection to contemporary underground culture.

Their most recent publication, Tanxxx and Magali Arnal’s Faire Danser Les Morts (Make The Dead Dance), handily plays into the current zombie fad with a twist.  A young girl wakes up one morning to find herself in a city overrun with the living dead.  While looking for food, she hears a familiar guitar riff, played by her favourite punk rock band, the Minutemen.  Will they be able to battle the zombies with hard rock, or have the punks fallen victim to the living dead themselves?

I’ve only been able to leaf through the book myself, but from what I’ve seen the art by Tanxxx (whom I had never heard of before this) is very vibrant, combining expressive shadows a la Charles Burns with the over-the-top explosiveness of Jamie Hewlett.  Magali Arnal’s colour work is nothing if not blaringly technicolour, befitting of a B-genre like zombie movie. All in all, this looks like a very nice modern take on the dance macabre, worthy of your attention.
