On shelves this very scrotnig day, Prog 1771 of The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, celebrating 35 years of publication, available with two alternate covers, the one above with an ensemble of various 2000 AD characters from across the decades, drawn by art droid Chris Weston (paying homage to the great Bolland, a nice touch, Chris) that you see above and the one below by one of the great veterans of 2000 AD and still a very influential artist to many of us, the brilliant Mick McMahon.
It’s almost impossible for some of us to articulate the importance of 2000 AD on the British comics scene – many of you, like me, have grown up with it, picking up that first Prog (with free space spinner!) back in 1977 in our tender, formative years and we’ve loved it and grown up alongside it over the decades. It makes me smile just to see it still hitting the racks after all this time and to think of some of the creators it has put before the comics readers over the years, a number of whom still write for 2000 AD now. It makes me smile to think of the Brit creators it launched into the wider international scene. It makes me smile to think of it influencing later Brit comics developments in the medium – can you imagine Crisis, Deadline et al without that proving ground of 2000 AD there first? But most of all it just makes me smile because it is a grud-damned good comic.
We’ve more on 2000 AD to come in the next few days but the anniversary prog is out today, go grab a bit of Brit comics history and wish Tharg and all his minions a very happy 35th birthday!
