DC Comics Unlimited [Wave 1] action figure reviews:
Hawkman & Flash (New 52)
DC Comics Unlimited, for those who don’t know, is the retail continuation of the DC Universe Classics figures that have been fan favourite DC figures (and DCs answer to Marvel Legends) for years. Mattel felt that they needed to rebrand the figures to reflect the changes in the New 52 and this is what they came up with. (Mattel are also doing monthly online figures that is a companion to this line and DC Universe Classics releasing the more obscure characters on their website!)
When the DC universe rebooted with the New 52 in 2011, the character with the most improved aesthetic redesign has to be this character, the Nth Metal wielding archeologist Carter Hall AKA Hawkman!

Anyway, onto the figure! The sculpt on this figure is fantastic, the mask and wings in particular are really great, looking like the figure has been almost pulled directly from the fantastic cover artwork included on the packaging! His chest armor and shoulder pad are made from extremely soft plastic so to be flexible when posing your figure.

And posing is not something you should have a problem with when we’re talking about this bad boy! As expected from Mattels DC figures, he’s super poseable with 23 points of articulation including 4 points on his wings alone! They can move inwards and outwards, as well as up and down at the peak of his wings! He comes with a golden axe (unfortunately not the megadrive game) and clip on claw for his clenched fist arm making him battle ready! The paint job is also really well done; there are no changes in style here so this Hawkman will sit nicely on your shelf next to your DCUC Martian Manhunter, DCUC New 52 Batman or even your DCUC Captain Cold if you wished it so! The gold paint looks awesome and appears just the right level of shiny without looking cheap like a vac metal toy or even too dull. The wings are also really nicely done and appear to really look like the wings of an eagle… testament to the greatness of the sculpt and paintwork!

As for Flash, who knew drawing ‘go-faster stripes’ on the Fastest Man Alive’s costume would make him look so much more awesome? Francis Manapul’s art in the New 52 Flash comic book is so amazing (as you can see on the packaging to this action figure), his panels and layouts are among the best in the business. Is it bad that this makes me want to play with my DC Comics Unlimited Flash figure so much more than any other figure?

DC Unlimited: The Flash Available on the FPI webstore here.
The sculpt is a dead-on likeness for the character and standards have drastically improved since we last got a Flash figure from Mattel… the logo on his chest is sculpted, as are some of the recesses in his costume where his “speed lines” are. The detail in Flash’s ear pieces is really great too, especially for such a small part of the figure as are the boots… those look like they could handle some speed!

The paint job on the figure is simple, yet effective, with a bold and vibrant colour scheme looking like it’s been lifted directly from the comics. His articulation is not too shabby either, able to be put into the most dynamic of running poses that you could possibly want!

The thing i’m most excited about, going back to Manapul’s art, are the energy effects that come with this figure! They’re 100% removable and just fit onto his forearms and into pegs on his back, and once on, provided you have posed Flash the only way Flash should be posed look exactly like he’s speeding across a double page spread! (or, you know, your shelf.)

All in all, these are really amazing figures, despite not being the biggest fan of Hawkman, I was completely unable to leave this untouched on the shelf and had to take it home with me. If you collected DC Universe Classics then this new wave is your continuation point, and if you never, this is the perfect jumping on point for a new and exciting line of action figures! They are available now (yes, right now!) alongside a repaint of the previously released New 52 Superman figure at Forbidden Planet International stores so get your hands on these beauties while you can!

I like you, Day — I like your enthusiasm, and your photography is great, but one man’s “most improved aesthetic redesign” is another man’s “fu*ked right up by Rob Liefeld”.

Haha, thanks! Liefeld surely wasn’t involved in the Hawkman redesign until he took over art at issue 9ish?
You’ve got to admit, the armoured New 52 version adds an extra element of cool to his classic design?
