Upcoming: the Lakes International Comics Festival

Bryan Talbot kindly drops us an update on the forthcoming first Lakes International Comics Festival which we mentioned a little while ago. The event runs from the 18th to the 20th of October in Kendal in Cumbria, in one of the UK’s most scenic regions (inspiration to many a poet, writer and artist over the centuries, including Bryan himself), and they’ve started announcing some of the guest details: Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Jose Muñoz, Joe Sacco, John Wagner,Carlos Ezquerra, Posy Simmonds, Glyn Dillon, Jon McNaught, Doug Braithwaite and Andy Diggle. There will be more names announced over the coming months, but that first batch of guests of honour gives a nice idea to the flavour of the event – which the organisers are modelling on European comics festivals, they say (which makes Angouleme winning Dillon and McNaught’s prescence especially appropriate) – with a good mixture of creators drawn from round the world.

The Lakes festival will also include “events where people will be able hear from writers and artists, panel discussions, special live drawing events, films, several exhibitions, workshops and a kids’ zone. Authors and artists will be signing copies of their work and there will be a marketplace to buy comics and comic art. There will also be some free events and exhibitions.” Shaping up even at this early stage to be an interesting line up, and I believe several of our sterling UK Indy comics presses are involved too, which is terrific. Also rather nice to see this sort of event not being restricted to the middle of a major city. Expect further updates as the months roll by (seems like a long way off just now, but be here quicker than we think!)
