Super-Sam – The End

And so after a cracking final act from Darryl we come at last to this, the final three pages from this story, the end. Its been a great run; over a year since Darryl began the adventures of Super-Sam and John-of-the-Night here. What started as a highly enjoyable gag-driven strip began to evolve in both terms of storytelling and artwork as the months went past and while there were still gags to be found at times an ongoing plot emerged instead of stand-alone pages and the characters began to grow and breathe and develop. Like I said, its been quite a ride and I’m delighted we were able to bring it to you every week:

We’re a day later than usual with this week’s Super-Sam; apologies, but I think you will agree it was well worth the extra wait as Darryl ratchets up the tension of the climactic final act of this story arc with a double bill and a shocking scene:

As we enter the final act of this terrific story arc Darryl’s sent us a few thoughts and observations along with this week’s artwork: “I’m now very close to the end of this particular Super Sam and John of the Night story. After which there will be a break while I work on other projects. This webcomic has been a long haul for me. At mostly one page a week on the Forbidden Planet blog, it’s taken over a year to work my way through the narrative. Not what I ever set out to do, but the story grew and grew in the telling, until I began to wonder whether I would ever reach the end. It’s been well worth the effort though, as I’ve learned a great deal about graphic story telling, especially in terms of colour.”

A day late due to illness but well worth waiting for; it’s all happening now as Darryl moves Super-Sam’s tale towards a dramatic climax with this double helping. Time is running out, decisions will need to be made, urgent course of action followed… But in their haste and pain will our heroes make the right decisions…

His powers are waning, he’s ill, he may be dying and he doesn’t even have his bullet-proof wig. Can Sam stand up to an assassination attempt?

I know I could be accused of bias since Super-Sam runs on here, but I have to say I think the strip has come quite a ways since the beginning, where it was more stand-a-lone, gag driven episodes. Much as I enjoyed those (and they regularly put a smile on my face) I think I have enjoyed the creation of an ongoing story arc much more; that continuing story has also allowed the characters to breathe a bit more too, I think. And I think Darryl’s style has developed noticeably through the series’ run; its looking much more confident and sharper now while the way he has been playing with the colouring recently gives the strip a nice, strong visual impact.

For Darryl fans there is more good news this week as he’s been working on a new strip, Uncle Bob Adventures: “Uncle Bob tells extraordinary tales of his long and adventurous life to his young nieces. Thrill to these colourful stories of Victorian London, the Wild West, darkest Africa, and at the Earth’s Core. All this and not much more. Winner of the Golden Monkey Best Comic Award (which I’ve just made up). ” Methinks Darryl has been re-watching his Doug McClure movies again for inspiration! He’s made up an online Ebook with four Uncle Bob tales on MyEbook for you to check out. Incidentally, for the creators among you Darryl tells me he found their site and software very easy to use and is quite pleased with what it let him do.
