You can never really have too much Alex Toth, can you? A genius, albeit a flawed one. But such an artist. And well worth the exhaustive coverage given by the 3 volume “Genius, Isolated” biography from IDW. It just looks stunning.

There’s along and informed interview with Mullaney and Canwell at The Comics Journal website. It’s well worth a read, and just reinforces how good “Genius, Isolated” is going to be.

The biography has been produced by Dean Mullaney and Bruce Canwell and is a lavishly illustrated book that includes the first biography of this giant figure. It’s promised to be full of artwork – everything from sketches to complete stories. This first volume covers the 40s and 50s, including his work on Zorro, and, for the very first time, the complete Jon Fury pages produced by Toth whilst serving in the war. But more than that, Mullaney & Canwell promise a rounded biography of the man, who certainly wasn’t afraid to make his opinions known.

And here’s what the whole thing will look like, with the slipcase that comes with Volume 3:

But there’s more Toth coming in 2011. Fantagraphics are releasing Setting the Standard: Comics by Alex Toth 1952-1954, that they describe as:

“….the first comprehensive collection of the great graphic storyteller’s work from the era. Editor Greg Sadowski is wrapping up his meticulous restoration of the pages and we’re looking at a July/August release for this 416-page full-color tome.”

And how about this for a little Toth artwork inked by Dick Giordano from 1970; issue 1 of Hot Wheels. (Yes, the Mattel toy line – from Alison at Space In Text, who has many more examples):
