Publisher Myriad Editions has announced details of a new graphic novel competition – from the official blurb:

“Myriad Editions is pleased to announce the first ever competition for a first graphic novel in progress. The entry may be by a single author or may be a collaboration between a writer and artist.

The winner will have the opportunity to develop their work in progress with Myriad’s creative and editorial team with a view to being offered a contract and publication by Myriad in 2012/13.

The winner will be announced in January 2012 at the First Fictions Festival.

The closing date is Monday 1st October 2011.

The winning entry will be an extract from a narrative work in progress – fiction or non-fiction – and will be chosen purely on the strength and promise of the art and writing by a panel of expert judges.”

Aforementioned judging panel include bestselling crime novelist and longtime comics fan Ian Rankin, the Guardian’s mighty bearded cartooning colossus Steve Bell, top comics creator Ilya, artist Hannah Berry, the redoubtable Bryan Talbot and Myriad’s Corrine Pearlman. Sounds interesting and potentially a useful foot in the door with a publisher for new comics talent. Full entry details can be downloaded from Myriad’s site, so get cracking!

Unlike a lot of competitions Jon has actually set some questions that will require a bit of thinking about – you have until August 20th to get your entries in to him. Enlightenment may possibly be included but is not guarenteed.

Once again those very nice people at the Japanese Embassy in London are holding the Manga Jiman competition, which is open to any UK residents over the age of fourteen, with a brilliant first prize of a trip to Japan. It seems to have become a bit of an annual fixture on the UK comics scene now (and very welcome too) and a good chance for new UK based talent to show off their skills in creating great manga. The theme this year is ‘nami’ or ‘wave’, which should be referenced in some way in your original entry. The closing date is November 1st and full details are available from the official site.

The CG Society and NVIDIA are running a new competition in digital arts: Accelerate. The theme this year is to design the vehicle of the future, using the great Syd ‘Bladerunner’ Meads as inspiration. The closing date for entries is June 30th and the judges this year will include Syd himself, Wired founder Kevin Kelly, BoingBoing’s Mark Frauenfelder and the excellent Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman from Mythbusters (one of the best geek-friendly shows around). There’s some $35, 000 worth of prizes in both cash and tech kit up for grabs for the winners, plus a chance to get your digital work viewed by some famous folks and shown off to the public; full details of how to enter are available on the CG Society site (you need to register with the CG society, but it is free). If you’re needing inspiration have a look at some of the fab digital art books from Ballistic, which have featured works from CG Society folks.

Graeme Neil Reid drops me a line to say that he and his compadres on the Scottish comics artists collective Scotch Corner have a new competition up for September. Graeme, like many of us, is a huge Doctor Who fan and he decided a while back to make a Who poster styled after the classic Star Wars movie poster, an influence I’m sure most of our readers will spot right away:

I do like that! The Scotch Corner guys are offering a chance to win the original inked illustration as well as the finished version seen above. And because he’s a nice guy and also on a sugar high from a Jelly Baby binge Graeme’s throwing in his DVD copy of Remembrance of the Daleks too.

The Glasgow Science Centre folks tell us they are showing the fifteen minute 3-D trailer for James Cameron’s much-anticipated, highly secretive (let’s hope the finished work equals the hype!) return to feature films, the science fiction movie Avatar on August 23rd. They’re also offering one lucky soul a chance to win a pair of tickets to the event – details on their website here. Since the actual movie won’t be out for several months yet getting to see this – let alone in IMAX – would be pretty fab; apparently when the chance of some similar preview tickets in the US was offered the resulting tidal wave of fans overloaded the official Avatar movie site.
