The BBC is reporting that new Doctor Matt Smith and his companion Karen Gillan will be embarking on a short UK tour this month, part of the BBC’s Outreach programmes which “will target hard-to-reach communities relatively underserved by the BBC.” Although when it names some of the destinations I have to say I’m puzzled at the BBC’s use of the term ‘hard to reach’ – I imagined perhaps remote rural locations or the islands of Scotland perhaps from that, but they mean Northampton, Salford, Belfast, Inverness and Sunderland. I’m really not sure how exactly these are ‘hard to reach’? Peculiar. Still, it is great that Matt and Karen and the Who team are going out ahead of the eagerly anticipated new series to meet the fans who are, after all, the folks who really made the show the world’s longest running science fiction series.

(Karen Gillan and Matt Smith from the promotional trailer for the new Doctor Who season due in April in the UK, (c) BBC)

Belfast is the first port of call on March 29th with the tour finishing in Salford on the 31st. According to the article after the tour the Beeb “will also hold events on big screens for Doctor Who fans in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Plymouth and Swansea”, so more of us will have something to look forward to. And while we’re talking Who, has anyone else seen the new trailer in 3D in the cinema yet? Great fun!

Good pal of the blog Oli Smith has been busy scribing away on more Doctor Who tales, this time with a strip in Doctor Who Adventures #153 which is on shelves right now:

(frames from Doctor who Arctic Eclipse, written by Oli Smith, art by John Ross, colours by Alan Craddock, in Doctor Who Adventures #153, (c) BBC)

Oli’s also just had another tale, this time a short Torchwood comic, published online to go along with digital channel Watch’s Alien Invasion week. Incidentally Oli comments on his blog that he’s now referring to the new Who story as part of his ‘deckchair trilogy’, on the sensible ground that his previous two tales of the tenth Doctor (on the BBC site and in the Doctor Who Annual) both featured the Doc on deckchairs. Psychiatrists are already enquiring about Oli and a possible childhood trauma involving a Tom Baker action figure and a collapsing deckchair on Brighton Beach.

The SFX Weekender was held over the weekend (well, duh!) and among the panels and cosplay and discussions and drinking there were, of course, the annual SFX awards. The Geek Syndicate boys were live-Tweeting them as they happened (thanks, Nuge) and SF Awards Watch has handily compiled them all. Neil Gaiman won the Best Novel award for The Graveyard Book, David Tennant won the Best Actor gong, although Who lost out to Supernatural for Best TV Show, a bit surprising considering its often hidden away on cable channels and has nothing like the audience figures for Who, but it does boast a very devoted following who doubtless voted their support for it. Neil Gaiman won again for the Best Graphic Comic/Novel category for Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader, which has already sparked a bit of discussion on Twitter – we all love Neil’s work and that was an interesting short tale but the best comic of the year? Really? Or was that more likely folks voting for their favourite writer rather than the best comic? And before anyone writes in to say how dare I criticise, please bear in mind I’m a huge fan of Neil’s work, but I still can’t see how that took the gong over some much more deserving works. Still, its not an SF or comics awards ceremony until we all start debating it, is it?!

(Neil Gaiman signing at last summer’s Edinburgh International Book Festival, pic from my Flickr; you can listen to audio of the entire event with Neil, Ian Rankin and Denise Mina on the blog here)

There was even more exciting Gaiman-related news from the SFX bash though – for years now its been hinted that Neil had been asked to pen a script for the ultra successful revived Doctor Who series. The thought of that made me and many others rather delighted, but so far its been only a teasing fantasy (see Pádraig’s 2008 interview with him here). Last night it came out on Twitter that Neil was indeed to write for the show at last and since Neil later said he’d given the SFX boys a scoop, as Cheryl Morgan notes that sounds like proper confirmation and later SFX posted it on their site too. Neil’s story should appear in an episode due to air in 14 months, so the second Matt Smith season by the sounds of it. Many will recall J Michael Straczynski pestering Neil for years to pen a script for his mould-breaking Babylon 5 series before it eventually happened (”Zooty – Zoot Zoot!”) with the Day of the Dead episode late in the show’s run. Well its something to very much look forward to and since Neil, like many of us of a certain age in the UK, grew up with the original show I’m guessing he’s pretty pleased about a chance to be involved with it too.

Last night the multi-award winning Doctor Who and outgoing Doc David Tennant scored yet again at the National TV Awards in London, with the series taking the best drama gong for the fifth year in a row, with Tennant picking up the oustanding drama performance award. And I know its not connected to SF&F (although he does the wonderful reading of Harry Potter for the audio books), but how lovely was it to see national treasure Stephen Fry being honoured last night too?

Finally we can shout about them! Yes, its a set of figures from the Tennant-era finale The End of Time which we enjoyed in the UK over Christmas and New Year, with an injured David Tennant’s Doctor, Timothy Dalton’s imposing Time Lord in his robes, John Simm’s blonde Master and, yes, we’re all giddy with excitement, but yes, it’s true, here’s the very first Matt Smith Doctor Who action figure!!! I’m making some space on my desk right next to my David Tennant figure…
