Dr Sketchy’s does Transmet

A sadly far too brief video giving us a tiny glimpse into the Transmetropolitan themed Dr Sketchy’s Anti-art achool which was staged to promote the Transmetropolitan Art Book for charity. Ryan Keely portrays the Filthy Assistant Channon, while acclaimed queer adult star/icon Jiz Lee essays her pretty funky, gender-bending interpretation of Spider Jerusalem, complete with the fearsome Bowel Disruptor. Very cool, just wish it was a little longer! (it’s spicy and saucy rather than too naughty, but any reader of Ellis and Robertson’s brilliant Transmetropolitan will already guess that it is still probably NSFW!):

As we blogged previously, the Glasgow Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School planned a special themed night around the mode, muse and artist Kiki de Montparnasse to go along with the launch of the graphic biography of Kiki by Jose-Luis Bocquet and Catel, published by SelfMadeHero. Doug at SMH has kindly sent us some photos of the event (via Frodo at the Tron), which apparently went down very well, with the rather lovely Mia Meow re-enacting the famous Man Ray image (as also used on the graphic novel’s cover):

Dr Sketchy’s anti-art school in Glasgow has joined up with SelfMadeHero for a special themed night celebrating the great muse, model and artist Kiki de Montparnasse in Tron Theatre’s Victorian Bar from 4 to 7pm on February 27th, to tie in with SMH’s new graphic biography of Kiki (just saw some arriving in-store recently, it’s a fair old sized work and I’m looking forward to reading it). Dr Sketchy’s fundraiser

Molly Crabapple tells us that there’s a second SketchyCon coming up (in May 2010), a gathering for organisers of the now worldwide ‘anti-art’ movement of art, burlesque, drink and imagination and other aspects of life and art which I heartily approve of, the idea being to let various worldwide organisers swap ideas and suggestions and skills so they can run better sessions for folks in many cities. In order to make it happen the Dr Sketchy’s folks are on a fundraiser, with certain levels of donations getting the donor some tasty artistic goodies from Molly; details can be found here along with an explanatory video.

Best of the Year – Molly Crabapple’s faves

We’re into our home stretch with out guest bloggers and their Best of the Year selections and I hope you’ve been enjoying the diverse works they’ve been highlighting for us. Today please welcome comics creator, illustrator and guiding light (or perhaps guiding spinning disco glitter ball) of Dr Sketchy’s, Molly Crabapple:

FPI: Can you pick three comics/webcomics/graphic novels which you especially enjoyed over the last twelve months and tell us why you singled them out?

Molly: Bayou, Fishtown, and A.D. -- New Orleans After the Deluge were all eye-poppingly brilliant. Beautifully drawn, tragic, and wonderful. Bayou especially was a magical realist coming of age story of the likes of which I’ve never seen.

FPI: Can you pick three books which you especially enjoyed over the last twelve months and tell us why you singled them out?

Molly: Who Killed Amanda Palmer?, Ho’s Hookers Call Girls and Rent Boys, edited by David Henry Sterry- incredibly smart, funny, unsentimental writing about the sex industry - Secret Identity: the Fetish Art of Superman Co-Creator Joe Schuster.

FPI: Can you pick three TV shows and/or movies which you especially enjoyed over the last twelve months and tell us why you singled them out?

Molly: Untitled: The Movie and Inglorious Basterds.

FPI: How did 2009 go for you as a creator? Are you happy with the way you got your work out this year?

Molly: It was an amazing year for me. I did my first graphic novel, spoke/produced events in Paris, Berlin and Sao Paulo, and even had the crazy honor of doing the poster for this year’s MoCCA Art Fair.

FPI: What can we look forward to from you in 2010?

Molly: Secrets. Possibly a murder

FPI: Anyone you think is a name we should be watching out for next year?

Molly: Kevin Colden!

FPI: And one final, special question – since its not only the end of the year approaching but also the end of the decade, is there any comics work you’d especially pick out as one of the best you’ve read this decade?

Molly: I’m a Neil Gaiman fangirl forever. So, everything he wrote, ever.

Fetish fun – when Craig Yoe met Dr Sketchy’s

Via Jeff Newelt comes this link to a spread of rather racy photographs from a Dr Sketchy’s night with Craig Yoe and the recent Secret Identity: the Fetish Art of Superman’s Joe Shuster and scenes from and inspired by the book re-enacted by some very photogenic models resulting in some cool pics and some nice artwork (probably not safe for work!).
