In addition to making some great mini comics and mini books, Lizz Lunney makes these marvellous mini-mini flip book comics …. 16-pages including covers, 7 comic pages for each story.

How mini? Well, if you’ve got anything like a 20″ monitor, then those covers above and the comic pages below are about full size.

Mini comics, but with all the funny and silly you’ll expect from Lunney. This time around it’s Bogmen who find themselves under the strange curse of some grotesque little Trolls, once so beloved of children and wrong thinking adults across the globe. But just like Lunney points out, in a tellingly clever turn of phrase, all things have their time.

And the reverse of the mini-mini flip book is Horsome, where you get to see all manner of horsey wonder. And the occasional silly horse type. I chose the silly to show you:

Which is really rather impossible to review. It’s a book of postcards, weird, silly, quirky artwork, something to make you and the lucky person to receive one of them smile. That’s about it really. Here’s how Lunney describes them, and a postcard from each artist to follow.

This is the second of Lizz Lunney’s proposed collection of “At The …” stories reflecting her love of the old “I Spy” books. She promises more to come on her blog, with such titles as At the Cinema, At the Post Office, At the Car Boot Sale, At the Jungle, At the Carpet Factory, At the Garden Centre, and her final, going to get her arrested comic; At Your House Watching You Sleep.

But here, we’re following up “At The Planetarium” with a trip to the caves for all of Lunney’s consistently wonderfully quirky and fun cast of characters.

Now, if you’ve experienced Lunney’s stuff before, you’ll find nothing new here, but that’s all part of the joy of what she does; her work comes at us in small, regular doses, and within those doses there’s more than enough to delight, interest, and make us giggle until the next time. A 200-page Lunney book might be a different thing entirely, but here, in 20 pages or less installments, this is just great stuff.

And if you’re new to Lunney’s stuff…. well, where the hell have you been? You’re missing some great work.

So, here we go again, all the familiar characters, all doing the usual, weird, marvellously wacky stuff we’ve become used to: Depressed Cat, Fat Pigeon + Smelly Pigeon, Sour Rabbit + Crispy Duck, Keith The Wizard and his magical Unicorns, Leaning Rabbit, and many, many more.

Last time At The Planetarium it was all in a suitably under the stars deep blue, here it’s a suitably nautical red and there’s even the chance to work out the secret message in the semaphore on the inside covers.

And if that doesn’t tickle something, then there’s probably no hope for you.

One last bit of art before I go, and a perfect representation of the other thing Lunney manages besides entertaining, delighting, and makiing you laugh and smile…. she has an ability to do something simple yet quite brilliant with her comic art. This is just fantastic; simple, brilliant, wonderful, silly, thoughtful, daft, all of the previous….

Or perhaps it’s just me? Does anyone else think this 4-panel strip is genius?

And it’s good to see it’s not without some reward. Although, unfortunately, it’s not really a reward from the comic industry.

Instead, she’s just landed a deal for these:

UK Greetings have commissioned 14 cards in a Lizz Lunney range. This means that very soon you’ll be able to find her artwork nationally in WHSmiths, Paperchase, Waterstones and many independent shops. Great, great news. Now, how about someone steps up and publishes her?

Lizz Lunney’s comics are always, always a delight to get. Consistently interesting, quirky, innovative, silly, funny, surreal slices of cartooning.

This latest isn’t really a collection of comics though, more a collection of gag comic strips, 80 pages of A6 sized miserableness all featuring that wonderful character of Lunney’s; Depressed Cat.

Here he is, the star of the show:

Don’t you just love him? Now, if only he could find a way to love himself.

It’s quite simple really. He’s a cat. He’s depressed. He does things. Things happen. It rarely works out that well for Depressed Cat, but even when there’s a chink of light breaking through the gloom, he can’t see it.

Along the way you’ll meet a few guest stars from the strange and wonderful place that is the Lunney-verse: Watermelon Boy, Keith the Wizard (plus Unicorns), Mr Lemon, and Dullbog.

You’ll see Depressed Cat in all manner of situations; depressed in a number of places, melancholy at parties, blue at work, down at home, generally under a cloud out and about. There’s even a visit or two to the shrink, and a glimpe at previous melancholic felines in an all-star guest artist gallery.

But in the end, the glory of depressed Cat is when Depressed cat is simply being Depressed Cat, a few panels of something and a perfectly timed sigh win the day every time.

The gag just does not get old. You can (and should) get Depressed Cat from Lizz Lunney’s website. Perfectly formed, brilliantly unusual Christmas gifts…. comics are what all the cool kids are giving you know.
