How cool are these fab little pieces of jewelry made from damaged, distressed old comics. Sue Smith sells these nifty items via her Etsy store Comic Salvage: “My husband is an illustrator and has been collecting comic books since he was a kid, so I’m surrounded by them. We love collecting anything vintage, especially toys and books from our childhood. We are often scouting out garage sales and flea markets for some good finds. I’ve always noticed the excessive amounts of distressed comic books that were out there. A lot of them are missing covers or ripped and not worth much. I loved the idea of recycling them into little pieces of history that you can wear!” (link via BoingBoing, Sue’s quote comes from interview in Geek Mom)

How fabulous is this? Forget the action figures or even the mighty 20 inch remote control Daleks – what we’ve always wanted is a Dalek we could get inside and move around in, exterminating everything in sight as we do (some of us of a certain age may dimly recall there were Dalek ‘rides’ you could sit inside in seaside amusement arcades back in the early 70s, although you couldn’t drive them around).

Well now we can. Well, okay, when I say we, I mean the kids can; I’m afraid us bigger kids simply won’t fit! But seriously, how brilliant is this, your own Dalek you can ride around inside? Five year old me would have gone berserk at the thought, I mean I thought my Tom Baker doll with the TARDIS where you spun the light on top to make him ‘dematerialise’ was the greatest thing ever… Available this coming summer in red and blue Dalek designs.

We’ve been bursting to tell you about these new action figures coming soon, but our lips were sealed close with a sonic screwdriver. Finally we can shout about them! Yes, its a set of figures from the Tennant-era finale The End of Time which we enjoyed in the UK over Christmas and New Year, with an injured David Tennant’s Doctor, Timothy Dalton’s imposing Time Lord in his robes, John Simm’s blonde Master and, yes, we’re all giddy with excitement, but yes, it’s true, here’s the very first Matt Smith Doctor Who action figure!!! I’m making some space on my desk right next to my David Tennant figure…

The first few items to go along with James Cameron’s eagerly anticipated Avatar film have started to appear on our webstore (although with some the secrecy on the movie means we’re still waiting on final images for some) and on the companion books front they run from younger reader-friendly guides to the Art book, while the accompanying merchandise goes from keyrings to the (ever so slightly!) more expensive AMP Suit Maquette. The Maquette is extremely detailed, expensive and collectable but one of the more affordable key rings glows in the dark! And yes, I am easily amused and I like that, some things you never grow out of, I still think glow in the dark stuff is fab… No doubt we can look forward to a lot more Avatar material in the near future (we’re waiting for the official word on the action figures) and as usual we’ll have it flagged up on the webstore as soon as its announced.
