Moomins and the Comet Chase, an all-new 3D animation feature with Finnish novelist and comic strip author Tove Jansson’s adorable ghost-like creatures, debuted earlier this month in Finland, where Jansson lived as a member of the Swedish minority.

It’s Finnish animation studio Filmkmompaniet’s second feature with the Moomins. An earlier movie, Moomin and Midsummer Madness (see trailer below), was created by using and reformatting footage from the original TV series (giving the Moomins actual dialogue in the process). This one, however, is an all-new creation, which uses digital 3D techniques to conjure up that vintage stop-motion feel that made the early animation so adorable.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkCe9rylUb4

The story of the film, which is directed by Maria Lindberg, is eerily topical. When the Moomins wake up one morning, they find their that their colorful, cheerful valley is completely covered in dust. For once, it’s not a Nordic volcano that’s erupted, but a comet which, as a philosopher predicts, will cause the end of the world. Moomintroll, Snufkin and Sniff take up a journey to the mountains observatory to find out if that’s really true. What begins as a summery rafting trip quickly changes in a big adventure… (sounds a lot like one of the Pooh movies, if you ask me)

On their site, Filmkompaniet also mentions a Moomin TV series of 78 episodes which should be in production at the moment. As yet, no UK or US release date has been announced. In the mean time, here’s a quick look at singer Bjork’s title track to Comet Chase :

The Geek Syndicate picks up on Jonathan Ross tweeting that his wife Jane Goldman is confirmed as writer for the fourth X-Men movie outing, X-Men: First Class: “Also, for those who need to know, my wife IS currently writing X men First Class. It’s just referred to as X men 4 around the house…”

Jane is no stranger to comics and SF, of course, with genre credentials stretching right back to a couple of hugely bestselling X-Files companion books in the 90s to script work on the recent Kick-Ass and, of course, Stardust. Jane will be re-teamed with director Matthew Vaughn for the X-Men flick – after the disappointing (and downright silly in places – in the bad way, I mean, the bridge scene is ludicrous) third X-Men movie fans will be hoping for a return to decent screen glory for our favourite mutants and this is certainly a team that raises those hopes.

The Edinburgh Evening News reports that Dugbus, the producers of an independent film involving superheroes and rare comics, Electric Man, are holding an open casting day today in the Braid Rooms at the Pleasance in Edinburgh (a short walk from the Edinburgh FP, as it happens) from 10am to 4pm. The story apparently concerns a couple of twenty-somethings running a struggling comics shop who come across Electric Man issue one, the rarest comic in the world (worth even more than the recent Batman and Superman debuts which went for a million dollars apiece?) – the stroke of luck they need to turn their failing business around? Maybe, but now they find themselves suddenly involved with a mad US comics collector, a Glasgow gangster, a mystery woman and Electric man himself. From the Dugbus website:

“Gotham has batman, Metropolis has superman, Edinburgh…not so much.

But that’s about to change.

Murder, mystery, romance, comedy…safety goggles. Jazz and Wolf go through it all. you’d think that would be enough…

and then the ‘real’ Electric Man shows up…

sparks will fly”

(mock up of issues 1 of Electric Man by Stuart Beel, borrowed from the Dugbus site, (c) Dugbus)

According to their website the Dugbus crew are working on a micro-budget approach, using sponsors and donations – more help is welcome from the looks of it, with contributors securing themselves a wee bit of screen glory with their names in the credit, so check their site.
