With Sony about to launch the new InFamous 2 computer game, the fantasy superhero game for the Playstation 3, they decided on a bit of comics fun to go along with the launch. In InFamous the decisions players make all have consequences, be they good or ill and deciding that the people who know most about the consequence of being famous (or infamous) are celebs, they decided to ask fans of the first game, bloggers and others to nominate some famous celebrities who had an influence in pop culture over the last year. And then they brought together seven cool comics artists – Barnaby Richards, Ellen Lindner, Jason Masters, Kate Brown, Jake, Fay Dalton and Luke Pearson to work on some fun comics pastiches of those celebs; those panels above and below with a fantasy take on pop singer Justin Beiber as an animal saving superhero are drawn by Luke Pearson. And for the stories they brought together a pretty brilliant pairing to work with those artists: the great godfather of Brit comics Pat Mills and the one and only Howard Marks (the famous/infamous Mr Nice)

“The moral issues that the game brings up are very much the preserve of comic books, and always have been. That and the super powers of the game characters have something of the classic spirit of comic books about them. This project has been a really fun way to play with the morality of the celebrity culture we are so obsessed with. Perhaps most exciting for me has been working with this slate of talented young comic books artist that we are all going to be seeing a lot more of,” Pat Mills on his involvement in the comics to go along with the game. I have to say I love the idea of Pat collaborating with Howard Marks, it fairly tickles my funny bone, given Howard’s infamous chequered past (documented in his autobiography Mr Nice, well worth a read), a good pairing with Pat’s well known (and much loved by readers) disrespect for overbearing authority and pomposity. And it is pretty cool to see Sony working with some very fine comics talents, quite a few of whom have been praised right here on the blog more than a few times.

Aaron Renier’s strip for the Unshelved site is an absolute delight for all of us who cherish the power of reading (especially for younger minds), the physically printed book and those remarkable palaces that are such an indicator of a truly civilised society, the public library. As ever more ill-considered budget cuts threaten our libraries and other media call kids away from the good old book it is a rather timely strip and the fact that Aaron used the great Roald Dahl and Quentin Blake as the inspiration for it gives me no end of pleasure, especially given how many grew up – and indeed are still growing up – reading their works, firing their young imaginations, opening doors in the mind that will take them to so many places and show them how much more wonder there can be to their world. And the world needs wonder.

Benjamin at French comics site BoDoi points us to this fun take of the (somewhat controversial these days for its period portrayal of Africans and colonial attitudes) Tintin in the Congo. Except this Tumblr offering is Tintin au Congo a Poil (basically Tintin in the Congo in the nude, or in the raw). Yes, folks, the those of you offended by lads with quiffs proudly strutting around with their bare comics botty and other bits showing should look away now (nothing like some hardcore nudity to start the day!). Oh and a quick tip, the Tumblr page is kind of in the opposite reading order to what you would expect, with the last page at the top for some reason, so best to skip right down to the bottom of the page and the read upwards.

The skirts on the female crewmembers of the original Star Trek were famously short (even for the 60s) and we know Kirk seemed to have a new alien woman asking to be taught about this human thing called ‘love’ almost as often as he ripped his top in a fight, but this (mildly NSFW) Trek parody takes it a bit further. Silly, naughty and quite funny (and a reminder how easy it is to reduce even an intelligent, trained 23rd century man to leering caveman with his tongue hanging out!):
