Today’s Inspiration is Leif Peng’s blog, dedicated to sharing some of the best illustration work from the 40s and 50s. And invariably there’s something truly inspiring on there for you to discover.

Take this little lot across three great posts; Rowland B. Wilson’s Playboy cartoons – tongue in cheek but beautifully drawn, such craft, such detailing, such magnificent use of colour. And funny, let’s not forget funny:

Over on the Fantagraphics website, they’ve a couple of sneak peaks for those of you thinking about getting the rather gorgeous 3 volume collection of Gahan Wilson’s Playboy cartoons. First there’s Neil Gaiman’s introduction as a nice entree followed by 25 pages of Gahan cartoons to download and really get your teeth into.

And after that you can decide who on your Christmas list has been very, very good this year and order it here.

Hugh Hefner on comics and cartoons

Hugh Hefner features in the new issue of Royal Flush magazine, talking not so much about the Playboy Bunnies but his love of comics and good cartooning. Apparently Hef not only talks about his support for good comics creators like Harvey Kurtzman and Jack Cole but how in his teens he started drawing himself in autobiographical comics strips (I never knew that about Hef). In a slightly more macabre vein Hef allowed Royal Flush to reproduce the suicide note that Plastic Man creator Jack Cole wrote him shortly before his death. Sounds interesting – these days most of us probably think of Hef purely in terms of Playboy titillation and its easy to forget the mag paid well for good cartooning work (with Hef even trying to bankroll an all colour comics mag, which sadly folded after just two issues). Marge as you’ve never seen her before…..

Playboy magazine’s November newsstand issue features Marge on the cover and a three page pictorial described by a Playboy spokeswoman “sexy with implied nudity.”

It seems that Playboy is chasing after a younger market these days and one of the ways they’ve decided to appeal to the teens and 20 somethings is by starting a newsstand edition with their first ever cartoon pictorial. Now is it just me or does the idea of a magazine featuring naked women having problems attracting sufficient numbers of young men to buy it seem a little strange? Maybe it was just me and my friends when we were growing up, but we were always keen to get hold of this sort of magazine. Today’s youth eh?
