Kaufman and Williams at FPNYC

Our colleagues in the New York Forbidden Planet have a couple of cracking events coming up this month. Cult director Lloyd Kaufman, co-founder of Troma (we’re not worthy!) will be at FPNYC on Monday 22nd for a special midnight launch of the Blu Ray of Polutry Geist: Night of the Chicken Dead. Sunday 28th sees the brilliant J.H. Williams III (Promethea, Batman and many more) in store at 3pm for a signing, so NY comics and SF folks, scribble those into your diaries now.

Chris Lynch goes Dark in Cardiff

Chris Lynch, esquire, one part of Monkeys With Machineguns (stalwarts on the British comics scene) has a new graphic novel, The Dark, coming out from Markosia this spring and the advance word on it is that its full of comicy goodness (check out the Geek Syndicate boys talking about the first few issues). I’m really pleased to say Chris will be celebrating the launch of The Dark in the Cardiff Forbidden Planet on Thursday the 8th of April from 5 to 6pm. MWM gun signings are always a hoot and I’m pretty sure this will be a blast too, so please do come on down and lend your support to Chris.

Burke and Hare events in Edinburgh tomorrow

A reminder that we have Martin Conaghan and Will Pickering coming to our Edinburgh store on Southbridge tomorow - Thursday January 28th – to sign copies of their recently published Burke and Hare graphic novel (reviewed here by Richard); for those with a literary bent and a fascination for history the boys will also be taking part shortly after the signing in a talk on the infamous historical Edinburgh murderers who slaughtered victims to sell to the medical school for dissection. The talk is organised by Edinburgh Central Library and Insomnia Publications and takes place in the library (on George IV Bridge, only a few minutes stroll from the FP shop in the heart of the historic Old Town), commencing at 6pm. Forty Five launching at Forbidden Planet Cardiff

Com.X’s intriguing new multi-creator graphic novel Forty Five will be getting its big launch at our Cardiff FPI this month; the book, penned by Andi Ewington, boasts a huge array of comics artists, each contributing a page to Andi’s tale of a journalist interviewing forty five superpowered heroes as he awaits the birth of his own child who may, or may not, carry the ‘Super-S’ gene which would mark the child as a superhero. We’ve got a whole slew of guests coming in for the launch, including writer Andi Ewington and artists Sally Hurst, Ben Oliver, Matt Timson, John Higgins, Lee Carter and Charlie ‘Walking Dead’ Adlard, plus special guest stars Eddie Deighton (Com.X founder) and Cla$$war and Indiana Jones writer Rob Williams coming along too for one big comics party. The show kicks off in our Cardiff branch, 5 Duke Street (phone 02920 228885) at 1pm on Saturday 23rd of January, so please do come down for some fun, get your comics signed and show some support for some fine home-grown comics talent.

We had the pleasure of hosting bestselling author Ian Rankin in the Edinburgh Forbidden Planet last night, signing copies of his debut graphic novel Dark Entries, which sees John Constantine involved in a demonic reality show (what do you mean, all reality shows are secretly demonic?) for a delighted crowd of readers (click the pics for the larger images):

Martin Conaghan and Will Pickering signing Burke and Hare in Edinburgh

I’m delighted to announce that the Edinburgh Forbidden Planet on South Bridge will be hosting Martin Conaghan and Will Pickering, who are coming through to celebrate the release of their fascinating new graphic novel detailing the grisly, true-life crimes of Messrs Burke and Hare, the infamous serial killers who saw the easy money to be made in old Edinburgh by Resurrection Men who dug up fresh bodies from cemeteries to sell to the university’s famous medical school for dissection and decided it was even easier to miss out the digging up corpses part and simply murder people and sell the bodies. Its a story that has resonated down across the last couple of centuries, told and retold and re-interpreted in pretty much every medium, with Will and Martin deciding to tell the proper history.

It seems highly appropriate they should be here as William Burke himself still hangs in the city to this day; his skeleton is in the medical school’s anatomy museum only five minutes walk from here, in the Old Town where they once plied their macabre trade along misty, cobbled streets and wynds. Martin and Will are in our Edinburgh store on January 28th from 4.30 to 5.30pm, so please do come along and lend some support to them and fine indy publisher Insomnia and also soak up a bit of our city’s darker history at the same time. The boys will also be giving a talk in Edinburgh Central Library on George IV Bridge a few minutes from FP on the same evening; more details will follow on the Insomnia site.
