It’s been a little while since I checked out the most recent postings on Better, Drawn, the site that showcases comics works addressing mental and physical health issues. Simon Moreton flagged up one strip, Don Depresso by Asidewalk, on Twitter recently and I had to have a look, followed by a visit to Asidewalk’s own Tumblr blog for a browse at some more postings. Some are several panels, others only a couple, but there is some interesting work in there and a nice sense of humour shining through coping with the Black Dog, well worth a wee look.

Great news from John Allison – his excellent Bad Machinery webcomic on his Scary Go Round site has been picked up by great Indy comics publisher Oni Press, home of, among many others, Scott Pilgrim. The series sees two groups of schoolkids in Scooby Doo hijinks (okay, not that Scooby Doo…) investigating odd goings on in their fictional small town as well as the everyday interaction of young teens at a high school; given John’s work has consistently proved popular (with shout outs in our annual guest Best of the Years from his peers as well as blog crew) I think this should do well, we’re very chuffed for John. There are several complete Bad Machinery tales up online already and this first printed volume is due from Oni next March.

Gordon Robertson and Cuttlefish have been documenting a health topic that affects a great many (especially men) and yet it’s one quite often we’re all dreadfully embarrassed to discuss, not just the dreaded C word of cancer, but the variety which strikes at our nether regions combining potentially fatal condition with social embarrassment. The guys are taking it seriously but also approaching it in a fairly light-hearted manner, making it a funnier and so a more approachable and open subject (humour always a good defence against life’s sling and arrows) with their online strip Arsecancer:

Well known Irish comics creators and supporter Tommie Kelly has just launched a new webcomic on the unsuspecting populace, The Holy Numbers. Set in Ireland and with a religious/spiritual movement at its heart, Father Ted on Craggy Island this is not. When a woman awakes in the middle of the night, concerned about her boyfriend’s strange behaviour – apparently talking to himself in nonsensical phrases to something that isn’t there – she is understandably concerned. He dismisses her and her worries by simply telling her of course she can’t see anything – she’s not on the right frequency. Oh and he isn’t himself anymore, he is now Ravensdale.

So is Dave – sorry, Ravensdale – a couple of verses short of a gospel or is he simply a charlatan, like so many before out to abuse the need many people have for some sort of religious or spiritual belief, offering them some flim-flam balm to soothe their souls and make them feel better about themselves while profiting from the resulting fame, monetary donations and influence this brings? Or is he the real thing?

Tommie has been kind enough to let me have a sneak peak at the first chunk of storyline and I’m glad to say he isn’t in a hurry to reveal the truth behind Dave/Ravensdale’s transformation into a spiritual guru but with various scenes including multiple flashbacks from various perspectives (from bystanders to other main players) he starts to build up an image of the impact he is having on the country with his ideas, the alarm he causes both the secular and religious authorities along the way. I can see this building into something rather interesting…

Rather nicely Tommie has built a whole site around The Holy Numbers – this isn’t just a few frames every week day of webcomic, the site has been constructed as if Ravensdale were real, his books actually existed and the movement he inspired is running the site, complete with interviews with agents of the movement and quotes from his books, as a way for the uninitiated to learn more about Ravensdale and his teachings. Quite a clever bit of world-building, to put it in SF terms and a nice use of the web to create more depth than just a webstrip itself could offer. I’ve only read the first couple of weeks of strips but already as well as an engrossing hook into an ongoing story there is also clearly a tale here that is drawing parallels to various spiritual organisations, be they the established churches, newer groups (like those started by certain SF writers we won’t name just in case!) or the seemingly never ending glut of theological self-help books churned out in enormous numbers by so-called spiritual gurus promising this is the book that wil help you live that idealised life as it was meant to be (and why not join the association, buy the CDs, make a donation to the retreat etc while you are at it?) and which are usually as spiritually fulfilling as their cousins in the self help ideal diet book section are…

I don’t think Tommie is having a go at any one set of theological ideas here (although I am sure that won’t stop someone being offended and convinced he is attacking their personal belief system, because there is always someone like that), rather the story is more of a comment on the human need to have some sort of spiritual and theological dimension to our lives, and if we don’t have one that fits we either invent a new one or latch onto one someone else shows to us if they can persuade us. There are already several strips up on the site, along with the aforementioned ‘value added’ related items that help set the theme of the world Tommie is creating here, so click on the ‘first’ button if you are just starting it – and obviously bookmark it now, it will be one to watch and see where Tommie is taking this.

I’m really a bad, bad webcomic follower, never manaing to keep up to date, always seem to forget about things, resulting in (sometimes) a mass catch up every so often. But I did like the looks of these two I saw this week, one because I know the writer, the other thanks to Tom Spurgeon:

First up is Poppa Bears by Ryan Alexander Taylor at the Trip City Collective site (which we’ve featured before). Just one episode, of a planned three monthly instalments, but this is a beautiful little family comedy of two bear dads and their cub:

Next up is The Five Dimensional Adventures Of Dirk Davies by Ben McCool and Dean Haspiel. Okay, so I know McCool from way before he headed over to NYC to find fame and fortune, and spent many happy years at Nostalgia & Comics with him, but this does look very good indeed. It’s all part of Shifty Look, which I’ll let Ben tell you about…

“In a nutshell, SHIFTYLOOK is reviving old (and for the most part, dormant) video game properties in the form of webcomics, and I’m working with artist Dean Haspiel to bring an extremely old school 1981 arcade game called WARP & WARP back to life. The game’s about as primitive as it gets, but me and Dean had a lot of fun developing a story out of pretty much nothing. We came up with Dirk Davies, a time-traveling, dimension-hopping detective who’s on the hunt for a wanted fugitive hiding out somewhere between time and space. An absolute hoot!“

Fine purveyors of bande dessinee Cinebook pointed me to this webcomic from Jennie Gyllblad, Jenspiration, a diary-based comic updated a couple of times a week. I’ve been browsing through several strips since Cinebook posted a link to it on their twitter and really enjoying it, a nice mix of the real world diary approach with some touches of fantasy, whimsy and our old friend who generally appears almost everywhere, The Absurd. Well worth bookmarking and having a nice read through some of the backlist of strips Jennie has up already; this short one on attending a first UK job interview made me chuckle – Brit readers (and Aussies, Kiwis etc) will get it right away, some of the rest of you may be wondering what did she do wrong?

But I hadn’t really had any time to investigate further, until now. There’s at least two really great little strips on Webtoons…

J. Torres; Gobukan. Loved J. Bone since seeing his work on Alison Dare. Amazing artist. So good that Darwyn Cooke stopped doing the brilliant Spirit series for DC because Bone couldn’t commit to more issues as the inker.
